A portal into an alternate world of the mid-2000s, ‘undone’ is a rally cry for the era where skittering R&B, UK garage and air horns shone bright. Pushing the tempo into a contemporary and unexplored direction, the track locks into Phil Fresh’s own nostalgia as a guide. “undone” was one of the easiest tracks to put together” he shares of the release. “This was inspired by music I loved in my early teenage years and more specifically 360p quality dance videos on YouTube.”
Written in collaboration with Sid Swindail, the track courses through melding UK garage-inspired basslines with danceable R&B. Phil Fresh continues, “I was in the studio with Sid Swindail one day and I was just showing him videos and songs that I was listening to growing up, specifically Grindmode’s “I’m So High”. After sharing this with him, we just cooked right away starting with funny little sounds to the beat like the classic mid 2000’s air horn or the sound of the studio door closing. I just had this visual of people dancing in the club as a reference to what I ended up writing.”
Since his debut onto the Eora/Sydney scene in 2017, Phil Fresh has nurtured his sound with a developed sense of creative freedom through EP L.A.T.E and a string of singles including 2023’s ‘comethru’ – supported across triple j, triple j Unearthed, Acclaim Magazine, fbi.radio, 3RRR – working to continuously refine his musical style that incorporates influences from hip-hop, pop and R&B.
Praised by NME for his ability to find “a new sweet spot in the midst of modern hip-hop and future-soul R&B,” his undeniable knack for hook-based construction has seen collaborations with Tasman Keith, Kwame, Bread Club, CLYPSO and beyond his own headline Australian east coast tour in 2019, he has an extensive live show resume with support slots alongside Kaiit, Imbi and Triple One.
Phil Fresh delivers limitless creation that is helmed by the pride in his Tongan nationality, and by combing through the territories of his music influences that range from bright pop to melodic R&B, he steadies to expand his creative reach.
