Phil Fresh returns with charisma-fuelled new single ‘comethru’
Eora / Sydney-based R&B artist, songwriter and producer Phil Fresh today shares his brand new single ‘comethru’. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.
Preserving his union of charismatic vocals and bright R&B instrumentation, the ever-expanding artist continues to soar on his new track ‘comethru’. Resetting his approach to making music, ‘comethru’ considers the producer process and the moments that focus on “the feeling over the science,” he says, of standard songwriting structures. Melding elements of pop and hip-hop, ‘comethru’ has the chirpiness of Aminé, the free-flowing ‘Sure Thing’ fold of Miguel and the undeniable knack for hook-based construction akin to Steve Lacy, formulating a forward-thinking production that cements Phil Fresh as a voice with conviction.
Speaking to the writing process, Phil Fresh shares, “‘comethru’ came about during a time where I found myself overcomplicating the writing process. After I dropped my debut EP “L.A.T.E” I put a lot of pressure on myself to top it, but in doing that I worked myself into a small box. I was focussing too much on writing something that I wanted to be deep and layered but once I realised that, I knew that wasn’t the way to go. I deleted whatever session I was working on, made a new one, chopped up a sample, and hummed gibberish into the mic and fit whatever words I could make out and in a few minutes that’s how ‘comethru’ was born.”
Since bursting onto the scene in 2017, Phil Fresh nurtured his sound with a developed sense of creative freedom, working to continuously refine his musical style that incorporates influences from hip-hop, pop and R&B. While his debut record Excursions of Love experimented with sonic confidence, his follow up releases ‘Jonah’ and ‘I’m The Man’ combed through the territories of his music influences and examined the pride in his Tongan nationality through affecting lyricism. His most recent project, 2021’s L.A.T.E took this exploration to the next level, landing support across local tastemakers including triple j, triple j Unearthed, Purple Sneakers, FBi Radio, Acclaim Magazine and NME Australia, who praised him for his ability to find “a new sweet spot in the midst of modern hip-hop and future-soul R&B”.
Poised as an innovative and exciting face in the Australian R&B wheelhouse, Phil Fresh has flexed his collaborative stature with the likes of Tasman Keith, Kwame, Bread Club, CLYPSO and beyond his own headline Australian east coast tour in 2019, he has an extensive live show resume with support slots alongside Kaiit, Imbi and Triple One.
