AG Sully

AG Sully’s music has always had a worn-in, dream-like quality, unfurling in the in-between hours where the air hangs heavy with both possibility and unresolved sentiment.  Her music can have an almost spiritual quality in its soft-spoken intonation and exhalation, that originates from her upbringing singing and playing piano in church growing up in Alabama.  Attending college in nearby Tennessee, she discovered the world outside of the Christian music that was ubiquitous in her youth, and quit school to focus on trying her hand at writing non-secular music.

Before making her way to New York City, she spent nine years spent carving out a name for herself in the Nashville music scene, where her soulful voice, influenced by alternative R&B singers like Solange, Lianne La Havas and Emily King shaped early buzzy records Space to Think (2021) and Premonition of Rain (2024).  “I was drawn to the feeling and emotion [of that genre] that isn’t in other music styles,” Sully explains, as well as the muddiness, warmth and grit of growing up in the South.

Through connections in Nashville, her early records were always made alongside outside producers, but out of necessity she taught herself production after landing in Brooklyn, where she spent most of her time writing and making music in the bedroom she was subletting.  It would be a pivotal year for Sully: while exploring what it meant to truly feel alone, she met her now husband, and embarked on a long distance relationship that would last a year, before getting married before they had even lived together.  “Are You Willing To Change?” and the new music to come explore the push and pull of this newfound romance, and what it means to surrender yourself to the devotion of someone else: “every song is about him, and I’d never before written a bunch of love songs,” she admits.
