Awning

Awning are a five-piece alternative rock band from Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland, led by prominent visual artist Christian Dimick, whose music is shifting, sensitive and cathartic. Since first emerging in 2023, the formation of Christian with drummer Riley Noonan, bassist Damin McCabe and guitarists Ethan Broughton and Eli Chamberlain have cemented a reputation as a formidable live band, layering narrative and prose side by side with punchy instrumentation – captured on record as it plays out live through their celebrated, self-titled 2025 release.

The band have trudged to the forefront of their local underground for their immediate and emotive brand of indie rock. “A rambunctious, raucous affair,” said 13th Floor, “drawing on alt-pop sensibility the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Aldous Harding, smattering themselves with quirky diversions.” Plus dates in Australia with Twine and opening for seminal North Carolina group Wednesday – of which Rolling Stonerecalled Awning as being “cut from the same cloth that’s stained with tears, wine, and blood” – the group most recently took on Aotearoa’s prominent Going Global Festival.
