PRAISE FOR Shady Nasty

“Shady Nasty’s music has always sounded like an engine revving: all menacing snarls and noxious guitars through a pungent fog of exhaust”

The Guardian Australia

“The trio’s sound is as inscrutable as ever: lyrics are written like text exchanges between gym junkies while the instrumentals are jenga towers of hip-hop beats, slowcore guitars and punk vocals”

NME

“Jittery and tense blasts of sketchy rock that sounds like kids born in the late 90s have discovered some early Helmet or Mark of Cain records. This is good rowdy stuff”

VICE

“The Australian trio's sound can turn on a dime between ethereally pretty and menacingly dark”

Kerrang!

“The atmosphere is unsettling in a similar way to Show Me The Body’s songs”

Stereogum

“Few do it with the skill and aura of Shady Nasty”

SCREWDRIVA‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Sydney post-punk trio Shady Nasty today share their latest release, ‘SCREWDRIVA’, drawn from their debut album TREK out Feb 21. Ahead of the album’s release, the band also announce their upcoming TREK tour in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in late April-May with tickets on sale now. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE  + BUY TIX HERE + PRE-SAVE THE LP HERE.

‘SCREWDRIVA’ shifts TREK into its most intense gear. Emboldened by a wild chorus sample, the lyrics invoke the lore of Australia’s franchise Mad Max – “Got chrome on my lips / Got chrome on the whip / Got blood on my wrist / Brah I swear the screwdriva musta slipped”. In this world, chrome is a precious and spiritually significant alloy representing a paradise beyond the living world. Here, it’s recontextualised to paint flying down Sydney’s motorways in chrome-adorned cars as a form of modern-day transcendence, particularly after downing a 600ml can of Monster Energy.

Bursting with post-punk vitality and muscular walls of sound, ‘SCREWDRIVA’ is the culmination of the grit and attitude of earlier releases ‘CAREDBRAH’, ‘G-SHOCK’ and ‘HARDSTYLE’. “I accidentally slashed my wrist at work fitting roof racks with a screwdriver” shares vocalist/guitarist Kevin. “I saw what was clearly gonna be a scar, shrugged it off, and kept going.”

Sparking notoriety since 2017, Shady Nasty craft music, lyrics and images from the banality of our everyday routines, and aphorisms from slang. Harnessing the digital age and branded totems of culture, their work speaks of masculinity amidst the growing blur of our on and offline identities, with a distinctive harbour-city twang. On TREK, their debut album, the cult band loosens the shackles of its outsider status to embrace a broader ambition, whilst still bleeding authenticity.

Produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets, TREK speaks unashamedly about the band’s changing familial and social expectations as their individual lives evolve. A departure from the impatient optimism of their adolescent selves, the album grapples with the less-than-glamorous hard graft of keeping afloat whilst remaining creatively uncompromised amidst Sydney’s cost-of-living and housing crises. TREK is lean and potent 8 tracks, enhancing the impressive world-building of their EPs: Bad Posture and CLUBSMOKE.

Experience TREK live as Shady Nasty debut the record with an all-new live show across Eora / Sydney, Naarm / Melbourne, and Meanjin / Brisbane in late April-May, with special guests to be announced. See all tour routing and ticket details BELOW.

Inspired by the likes of King Krule, Low Life and Show Me The Body and informed by backgrounds in jazz and classical music, Shady Nasty subvert expectations. A world bound by modding cars, immigrant heritage and digital obsessions, Kevin Stathis, Haydn Green and Luca Watson, together play a left-field breed of punk that recalibrates their formal training to its most uncustomary extremes. Their second EP CLUBSMOKE, a blurry-eyed meditation on vlogging, gymming, clubbing and clout, the group saw international acclaim from NME, Stereogum, Kerrang, DIY, New Noise, BPM, and locally from triple j’s Home and Hosed and Unearthed, fbi.radio, 2SER, RAGE and more, the success taking the group to their debut UK/EU tour with a sold-out Oxford Art Factory home show. More recently the group appeared on stages with High Vis, Amyl and The Sniffers, Parramatta Lanes plus SXSW Sydney, Parramatta Lanes. Wherever they play and no matter the room size, devout adherents clammer to propel a heaving mosh.
