Melbourne / Naarm-based producer, songwriter, and vocalist Sonny Ism today unveils his latest track ‘Daggry’ featuring Copenhagen-based producer DJ Popup. The single serves as the final preview for his forthcoming album, Dad Zone set for release on December 14 via Northern Underground Records. LISTEN HERE.

A testament to Sonny Ism’s atmospheric and slightly melancholic soundscape, ‘Daggry’ is a rich house track that moves back towards his early, upbeat sonic style that is reminiscent of Chaos in the CBD and Logic1000. A collaborative effort with Copenhagen-based producer DJ Popup, a figure in the Danish house scene who is most known for his take on life-affirming dance music, ‘Daggry’ joins previous tracks ‘Song for Julia’ and ‘Shadows’, his upcoming album, Dad Zone, is a release that nimbly genre hops all while maintaining a laid-back stream of composition. Through buttery, transcendent synths, the track, meaning ‘dawn’ in Danish, is a nod to Sonny Ism’s ability to cross-pollinate cutting sentiments with intricate walls of sound, affirming his dual role as both a songwriter and a producer effortlessly balancing electronic experimentation.

Speaking to the track’s conception, Sonny Ism shares “I wrote this song with my good friend August Busch AKA DJ Popup who was born and raised in Copenhagen. We recorded it via correspondence, which was one of the first times I had worked this way. We had a lot of fun putting it together and finally having the chance to collaborate on music after being friends for the past 6 years. August was one of the first friends I made whilst living in Copenhagen, so it felt only natural to collaborate on a tune. I had just moved back home to Australia, so this track marks the end of an era in many ways in terms of moving home from Denmark and Sweden and the start of something new in Melbourne again.”

Sonny Ism, the musical alter ego of Xavier Bacash, has been a stalwart in the Australian underground for the past decade, navigating a diverse range of musical realms including his position as one half of psychedelic pop duo Gypsy & the Cat. Having relocated to Copenhagen and now residing back in his hometown of Naarm / Melbourne, Bacash fuses soundscapes from both Scandinavia and Australia based from his experience immersed in the local Danish music scene, a scene that brought the Sonny Ismproject to life.

Sonny Ism has not only carved a sonic niche for himself but has also become the face of his own label, Northern Underground Records. The label traverses a broad sonic spectrum of Danish stylistic conventions, seamlessly oscillating between synth-pop and off-kilter house, leaving listeners eager to unravel more with each encounter. Bacash’s success with previous records such as Clock Without Hands, Island Impressions, and Union Integration of the Shadow has positioned Sonny Ism as a prominent figure in the DIY pop landscape, garnering a fanbase across platforms like triple j Unearthed, NTS Radio, FBi Radio, 3RRR, BBC Radio 6, and XLR8R, among others.
