South Hill & Friends is out March 1.
In 2023, The South Hill Experiment — the project helmed by Los Angeles-via-Baltimore brothers Baird and Goldwash — introduced themselves with MOONSHOTS and SUNSTRIKES, two records whose “exciting wide-eyed sound” (KEXP) drew widespread acclaim and year-end plaudits from KCRW, FADER, Clash, Glide, and more. These two projects coursed with such a creative vitality and intoxicating camaraderie that, as KCRW put it, made listeners “feel like we’re witnessing, indeed, an experiment, explorations for a soundtrack to a film that doesn’t yet exist.”
Today, S/H/E deepens their sonic universe with South Hill & Friends, a new EP due out March 1st featuring collaborations with Karriem Riggins, Maxo, Buck Raines, and Sofia Campos. Bringing together elements of jazz, hip-hop, Mexican folk, psychedelia, and more, it’s a tribute to the exploratory spirit that Baird and Goldwash bring to all of their music — including previous collabs with the likes of Danny Brown, Arlo Parks, and Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth — and a further evolution of the eclectic, singular sound.
To introduce the EP, S/H/E shares “Little Monk” ft. Karriem Riggins. Built upon the particular, powerful percussion of Dilla protegé and Kendrick Lamar-collaborator Karriem Riggins, “Little Monk” swings with drunken confidence and switchblade precision. Its descending keyboard lines and pitched-up Chet Baker impersonations lend it a suave slinkiness — a colorful and all too brief reminder of The South Hill Experiment’s alchemic touch.
Says S/H/E: “We’re kicking off 2024 with a controlled explosion called ‘Little Monk.’ Last November we got to work on the Danny Brown track ‘Tantor,’ which checked the bucket list and whetted our appetite for mean beats. Expect the rawest S/H/E music yet in 2024, starting with the South Hill & Friends EP.”
