Oklahoma-based dream-pop duo Sports usher in the new year with ‘Drama King’, the next single from their forthcoming self-titled album, Sports, arriving February 20, 2026 via ONErpm. LISTEN HERE + PRE-SAVE THE LP HERE.

‘Drama King’ pushes the duo further into electronic territory without losing their melodic core. The track feels almost gamified in its textures, jittery synths, warped tones, and elastic rhythms, but stays grounded in a strong pop sensibility.

Lyrically, ‘Drama King’ circles themes of jealousy, self-doubt, and the mental spirals that come with overthinking. The song builds a vivid internal world, pairing anxious thoughts with a buoyant, playful arrangement. A catchy chorus cuts through the track’s digital edges, while moments of human performance, especially piano and guitar, add warmth and contrast.

Written in early 2024, ‘Drama King’ emerged from a period of transition for Sports. After moving into a new studio space months earlier, the duo reconfigured the room into a more traditional setup – a change Christian says helped them “stop overthinking things and just write.” The song was created on the first day in the revamped space, with guitar parts, vocals, and lead lines tracked quickly to preserve its immediacy.

That instinctive approach extended to the lyrics. Cale describes recording the vocal as a stream-of-consciousness exercise, saying he “didn’t want to know what the song was about” while writing it. The result is a candid snapshot of the anxiety and self-comparison that often surface in his songwriting, worries that he’s been dealing with since his teens. One of the track’s most revealing lines, “You must be playing secret chords that please the Lord,” captures what he describes as a jealousy toward confident people.

While much of ‘Drama King’ leans into digital textures and glitchy production, moments of warmth cut through. A piano recorded live in the room became central to the song’s emotional grounding, giving it what Christian calls “something more real” – a reminder of the human presence beneath the layered production and a key reason the duo are eager to bring the track to the stage.

‘Drama King’ follows a run of acclaimed singles – ‘Nice 2 Meet Myself (Bang Bang Bang)’, ‘If You Want Me‘, and most recently ‘Keep Falling In Love‘ – each praised for their inventive blend of shimmering synths, psychedelic undertones, and left-of-centre pop structures from, by the likes of Galore, LadyGunn, Fault, Ones To Watch and Clash Magazine.

Following the release of Sports in February, the duo will embark on a Headline North American in April 2026, before heading overseas for a UK & EU tour in October.
