STRANGE LOT’s “Rain and Fog” video is a blissed- & bugged-out shoegaze roar
STRANGE LOT — the Austin-based band whose “Western-sun-scorched take on psych-rock” (KUTX) has garnered a local cult following — share a new video today for “Rain and Fog,” the B Side to their brand new 7″ vinyl on Greenway Records (Frankie and the Witch Fingers, L.A. Witch, Acid Dad, GIFT). The track, mixed by legendary producer Dave Fridmann, combines the lysergic propulsion of Queens Of The Stone Age’s desert rock, the blissed- and bugged-out drone of Clinic, and the melodic musculature of Ride. The band will also head out on tour this month, kicking off in Texas supporting The Black Angels; more info below. Listen to / watch “Rain and Fog” here.
Of the track, STRANGE LOT says, “Rain and Fog is a glimpse into the next chapter of our sound, blending shoegaze guitars with driving bass and crisp synths. We tracked most of it at my home studio, and Adrian Quesada (The Black Pumas) kindly let us record drums at his Electric Deluxe Studios. Dave Fridmann mixed it, which is a dream for me since he worked on some of my favorite records, Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker, the MGMT albums, The Flaming Lips, Spoon. He brought his own vibe and touch, and it really set the cherry on top.”

This 7″ — including the recent single “Hatin’ You,” produced by Alex Maas (The Black Angels) and mixed by Jim Eno (Spoon), — is released in anticipation of a debut album that boasts some big-time collaborators: Maas, Eno; mixing by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, MGMT), and mastering from GRAMMY-winner Howie Weinberg who’s worked with Smashing Pumpkins, Prince, and Nirvana.
STRANGE LOT has shared stages not with acts from The Black Angels to The Boogarins, and is a staple in the Austin music scene. They’ve played stages from Leveiation Fest to SXSW. Earlier this year, STRANGE LOT released a live session with more tracks from the album — watch it over at FLOOD here.
STRANGE LOT began as the bedroom project of singer/guitarist Dominic Mena in Phoenix before moving to Austin in 2019. The band has grown into the present lineup of Dominic Mena, Tim Lormor, bass guitarist Nate Hahn, and Jordan Fitzpatrick on synthesizer and guitar. They’ve opened for The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Jesus and Mary Chain, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Kikagaku Moyo — a tidy collection of acts that triangulates their sound.
