Anticipation for Swapmeet’s debut album continues today, with the announcement of headline shows across Australia, the US, UK and EU this September – November. New single ‘Halfway’s brilliance shines through Swapmeet’s primal instrumentation. Bristling with liminal guitar picking and barely-there piano, capturing the fluid and captivating drive of their craft. The catharsis at the heart of ‘Halfway’s close – an extension of their underground hit ‘Collision’ to their influence in feeble little horse – results in an intoxicating blend of youthful effervescence.

Enduringly reflective of Mount Zero’s excavation of ‘firsts’, the group reveal that ‘Halfway’, “looks at the first confrontations with change. The first confrontations with loss, and every choice feeling like a mistake. When you finally realise things can’t truly ever return to how they once were.”

Named after the road sign passed across many an interstate drive, Mount Zero would become a beacon to another portal for the group. A place they’d never visit, but indicate a shifting landscape. “Mount Zero is a place you pass but never go,” says Maxwell Elphick. “It became a symbol for people we’d see but never meet. When you’re always in a different city and trying new things, there are a lot of experiences you observe but never get to fully explore.” Things were about to get interesting.

Mingling airy sweetness with jagged surrealism, Mount Zero transmutes so many of the regrets and uncertainties of young adulthood into a burgeoning, newfound confidence. Bottling the tooth-gritting intensity of feeling yourself change at the cellular level under reality’s unyielding pressures, it’s a tribute to all the lives that can never be lived, all the paths that will never be followed – and an ode to the one that lies just ahead, too. Mount Zero marks the moment the Adelaide four-piece come into their own.

Following recent appearances at Phoenix Central Park – which resulted in a double showing to meet ballot demand – and Against The Grain Festival, Swapmeet’s world tour alongside their award-winning live show resume is set to continue affirming their status as a band that must be experienced live. Their playful on-stage banter, trading instruments and vocal duties reflect the collaborative dynamism at the heart of the project; just four angels playing in heaven. This September, Swapmeet will take to headline shows across Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, supported by Naarm-based punk hybrid dogworld.
