Today, Australian indie-pop upstarts The Rions announce their forthcoming new EP, Happiness In A Place It Shouldn’t Be, due this Sept 27. With the news, the band unveil another taste of their confident and steady evolution in their new single ‘Physical Medicine’. Merch bundles including their first vinyl pressing, with bundles available for pre-order from 9AM AEST on July 5 via their website. LISTEN HERE + PRE-SAVE THE EP HERE.

Brimming in golden riffs, searing chords, and a driving bass, ‘Physical Medicine’ deftly balances the infectious accessibility of the pop rhythms and emotional understanding found in the darkest lyrics from Styles or Healy, in a dizzying depiction of heartache and dissolution. Of the track, the band share, “Love is at its best when it has the freedom to flourish and persist out in the open, unapologetically and without hesitation. But love isn’t always found where it should be. Sometimes love is found at the expense of another, and that’s what Physical Medicine is about. It’s about the guilt of giving into a forbidden love, but giving into it all the same.”

‘Physical Medicine’ follows the success of their recent sold-out national tour. Stopping in Fremantle, Melbourne (x2), Hobart, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Sydney (x2), the young band from Avalon, played to their biggest rooms yet, before revealing a co-headline tour with Pacific Avenue across the UK and Europe this August. See dates and details below.

Happiness In A Place It Shouldn’t Be is the second EP from The Rions, and includes their radio-topping track ‘Sweet Cocoon’ which peaked at #1 on triple j’s Most Played Tracks. The release follows their quintessential coming-of-age Minivan EP, which delved into self-discovery, grief, and heartbreak. Now a little older and wiser, the band returns with a new body of work. Reflecting on their latest creation, they share, “For our second EP, we wanted to approach it with raw authenticity. This is the most genuine we’ve ever been with our stories, and we’re thrilled to share it with you all.”

Forming back in high school under the encouragement of their music teacher, Mr. Stone (father to Northern Beaches musical royalty Angus & Julia), Noah Blockley, Harley Wilson, Asher McLean, and Tom Partington began their journey. They uploaded their single ‘Night Light’ to triple j Unearthed, eventually winning Unearthed High in 2021, catapulting them to national recognition. The Rions embarked on their first headline tour in Aug/Sep 2022, selling out all nine shows weeks in advance with their spin on indie-rock. Influenced by Arctic Monkeys to The Beatles, their sound has amassed 27 million streams worldwide, featuring hits like ‘Sadie’, ‘Halfway Out’, and ‘Head Still Hurts’, followed by ‘Disassociation’ and ‘Anakin’.

The Rions have solidified their status from ‘ones to watch’ to in-demand through steady touring, supporting acts like Lime Cordiale, Boy & Bear, and Pacific Avenue, while gracing festivals such as Grapevine Gathering, Yours & Owls, and SPIN OFF. Their debut Minivan EP propelled them forward with notable placements in the Hottest 100 and nominations for Rolling Stone Awards, back-to-back sellout tours from Melbourne’s Corner Hotel to Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory, along with acclaim across triple j, Unearthed, and RAGE. The Rions have their eyes set for the globe with their debut EU/UK co-headline tour, following their international debut in Aotearoa / New Zealand earlier this year, sell out in London within 24 hours and venue now upgraded to The Garage – See all tour routing details HERE.

First forming back in high school where they took to talent shows encouraged by their music teacher Mr. Stone (father to Northern Beaches musical royalty Angus & Julia), Noah Blockley, Harley Wilson, Asher McLean, and Tom Partington went on to upload their single ‘Night Light’ to triple j Unearthed. From there the band went on to take out the winning prize for Unearthed High in 2021 which catapulted them to national recognition. Earning their badge as ‘ones to watch’, The Rions continue to turn heads. Embarking on their first ever headline tour in Aug/Sep 2022 their spin on indie-rock saw the teenagers sell out all nine shows weeks in advance. The shows solidified a loyal fanbase of their own, citing influence from Arctic Monkeys, Dayglow, Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale and The Beatles, their sound has cultivated 27 million streams across DSPs worldwide from their catalogue including ‘Sadie’, ‘Halfway Out’ and ‘Head Still Hurts’ followed by ‘Disassociation’ and ‘Anakin’, each stronger than the last. 2023 kicked off a period of steady touring for The Rions, supporting Lime Cordiale, Boy & Bear, Pacific Avenue to festival appearances at Grapevine The Gathering, Yours & Owls, SPIN OFF, Party In The Paddock, Festival of the Sun and others.
