Originally released in 2015, Hoops marked a turning point for The Rubens—catapulting them from promising newcomers to one of Australia’s most beloved live acts. The album spawned hit singles, including the title track ‘Hoops’, which famously took out the #1 spot in triple j’s Hottest 100, and laid the foundation for a career that has seen them headline major venues and festivals around the country.
These special shows will see The Rubens dig back into the Hoops era, playing a selection of fan favourites from the record—woven throughout a career-spanning setlist that showcases their evolution across five acclaimed albums. It’s a rare chance to experience the energy of Hoops live in an intimate setting, as the band reflects on where they’ve been and teases what’s to come. It also forms part of their friend’s Oxford Art Factory’s 18th birthday party series.
Supported by MISSO and further special guests to be announced, today’s announcement marks the start of more celebrations planned over the coming months – both in veneration of Hoops’ milestone and in preparation of The Rubens’ highly anticipated sixth studio album.
The Rubens are the three Margin brothers, Zaac, Sam and Elliott, and long term friends Scott Baldwin and William Zeglis. Their slow burn breakout ‘My Gun’ would catapult the five piece from Menangle NSW into one of Australia’s leading success stories in recent memory. Their ARIA Platinum debut would set the tone for their trajectory: several national tours, performing at every major Australian music festival, supporting Bruce Springsteen, The Black Keys, Grouplove. All before Hoops was even within reach. Debuting at #2 on the ARIA Album charts, Hoops today claims ARIA Gold status and its title track would place The Rubens in a coveted group with Gotye, Vance Joy, Jet of #1 winning song’s in triple j’s Hottest 100.
In the time since the group have performed at some of Australia’s milestone venues from the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Margaret Court Arena to sold out tours across North America; arena tours supporting PINK to a coveted performance with Vic Mensa at Splendour In The Grass. To date their entire catalogue has amassed over 300+ million streams and 250,00 physical albums. With back to back ARIA Chart placement throughout their catalogue alongside awards for APRA Rock Work of the Year (‘Never Ever’) and ARIA Awards for Producer of the Year and Engineer of the Year (0202), even an MTV Unplugged live album, “The Rubens’ story is a bit of a whirlwind” (GQ Australia).
