SUNSTRIKES is out December 1, preorder it here.

Today, The South Hill Experiment — the freewheeling new project from brothers and Baltimore natives Baird and Goldwash, who are known for their own music as well as their studio work with Arlo Parks, Danny Brown, Dave Longstreth, Brockhampton, and so many more — announce the December 1 release of their new album SUNSTRIKESPre-order SUNSTRIKES here.

Alongside today’s announcement, S/H/E share a new video for “Snake At The Altar.” “Snake At The Altar” is an absolute beast of a track — a call-to-arms that evokes the insistent bass pulse and textured post-punk of DIIV, the artsy maximalism of Broken Social Scene, and the vivid studio psychedelia of XTC.

The “Snake At The Altar” video follows Goldwash as he runs a marathon, with shots interspersed of Baird chilling with a boa constrictor around his neck — part Bond villain, part weird reptile guy in your dorm. Special shout-out to Jeremy, the cameraperson who, incredibly, ran the marathon alongside Goldwash.

Sunstrikes is a transportive introduction to the rich, warm soundscapes of The South Hill Experiment, spanning space age rhythmic twitch reminiscent of late-period Stereolab, sleek bass-forward production descended from Tame Impala, jazzy Bossa nova grooves, and airy textures that recall the most refreshing Balearic resort tunes.

It’s the type of project that shuns commercial ambition — something that has certainly been dangled in front of the accomplished production duo — in favor of chasing whatever feels good. South Hill Experiment even abide by a creative manifesto, albeit one with the charming air of a childhood pact to maintain a sense of wonder. It concludes: “The most exciting time to make music is always right now.” That urgency and vitality courses throughout SUNSTRIKES — it’s a love letter to the camaraderie and community of music, and the unique solace it can provide.

Earlier this month, The South Hill Experiment dropped “Parker Solar Probe (ft. Jeff Parker)” and “Deep Green,” the first preview of SUNSTRIKES. FADER named “Parker Solar Probe” a Song You Need In Your Life and described it as “both celestial (Arkestral, if you will) in its expansive vocal and guitar lines and tethered to earth by a steady funk groove.” Check out “Parker Solar Probe” here.

The group are on a tear right now: CLASH called South Hill Experiment’s debut LP MOONSHOTSreleased earlier this year, “a bustling ecosystem of sounds, themes and imagery — it’s raw yet refined, genre-fluid yet tidy,” while KCRW praised its assemblage of “music-teacher piano chords, disco pews, chanting choral vocals, synth fly-by’s, and happy lil’ bass grooves.”

After debuting the new music live at a special rooftop performance on the eve of the October 14 solar eclipse, The South Hill Experiment are preparing to announce SUNSTRIKES album release shows — news on that to come soon.
