‘MISS HER’ blends the heartfelt edges of indie with TNSW’s DIY and garage roots. Bright riffs and soaring vocals contrast lyrics that reckon with mortality. Ruminating on the impact of loss, ‘MISS HER’ comes to a head with the charged-up outro: “I don’t ever wanna spend another day without ya, cos I can’t stop thinking about ya.”
Jamie Timony reflects: “Over the couple of years we were writing and recording, a few close friends lost people very dear to them. I was thinking of them while recording the vocals. I think about death quite a lot. Definitely got a bit of death anxiety. It scares me – the thought that it can all just change so drastically at any time. Your whole life can be rocked in a single moment. Flipped upside down forever. I sometimes find it sad and kinda scary that the party must come to an end, and that at some stage we have to experience the suffering of losing the ones we love. But this is life, I suppose!”
‘MISS HER’s melancholic lilt is the latest example of the group’s stylistic range on the forthcoming GODSPEED, produced under the stewardship of punk luminary Ben Greenberg (Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Ceremony). “It’s definitely one of the more rock ’n’ roll songs on the album,” Timony continues. “It’s been fun leaning into different styles and genres on this album and just following our noses.”
With today’s release comes news of the group’s signing to Ground Control Touring for North + South American booking representation, under the wing of Josh Stern, who has nurtured the careers of a diverse, genre-defying roster of artists as wide as Show Me The Body, SPEED, and Angel Du$t, to MIKE, George Clanton, HiTech, and more.
Anticipation for TNSW’s new album follows editorial support from Kerrang!, Clash and The Line Of Best Fit, plus international DSP playlisting across the US, UK and France for title track ‘GODSPEED’, including New Noise, The Rock List and All New Rock on Spotify, while their previous anthem ‘INSTINCT‘ was featured in Rolling Stone, 10 Magazine and Life Without Andy.
Where their last TNSW LP took them from brute-force basement punk to hardcore fusion, GODSPEED LP pulls from an even broader church of influences, from ’80s balladry and British guitar pop to full-throttle hardcore.
Switched on and sick of it all, the album is a reminder that salvation has no blueprint. Trust yourself and see. As personal as it is politically charged, the eclectic and galvanising listen is also a damn good time. These New South Whales have always straddled the line between harsh reality and comic relief, but they have never betrayed their values or the genre’s anti-establishment ethic. Dismissing any concerns of the band having become too self-serious, GODSPEED is a refinement rather than a reinvention.
The Melbourne foursome of Jamie Timony (vocals), Todd Andrews (guitar), Will Shepherd (bass), and Frank Sweet (drums) have honed their blend of undeniable artistry and self-effacing comedy to runaway success across multiple disciplines. From their cult Comedy-Central mockumentary TV series These New South Whales and satirical talk show TNSW Tonight!, to their hit podcast What A Great Punk, which is rapidly approaching 500 episodes over its five-year history, there remains a distinct separation between These New South Whales’ comedy and their music. As a band, any notion of parody was put to bed with the critical success of their last album, TNSW, which was nominated for a ‘Best Heavy Album’ ARIA after debuting at #9 on the ARIA charts. They’ve shot the shit with rock royalty — Tame Impala, Amy Taylor (Amyl & The Sniffers), Tom Coll (Fontaines D.C.), Rodger O’Donnell (The Cure) among them. But TNSW’s live show resume is just as significant, sharing stages with the likes of Shame, Soft Play, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, The Garden and Grinspoon, while also gracing triple j’s seminal Like A Version.
