For Tjaka, performance and the stage manifests an all new power for the group. An opportunity to tap into something greater (a feeling they liken to gaining “superpowers”), as they become a heightened version of themselves through music. It’s only natural then that their debut EP would harness that metamorphosis. Elevate boasts a range of styles and genre, rich with experimentation and dynamism. Reflective of journeys in growth and transformation, and above all, their deep connection to their cultural roots; to Country.
Including the recently released frenetic ‘Marching Band’ and A Tribe Called Quest inspired ‘In A Box’, today’s title track reflects Tjaka’s mission across their EP debut – indebted to the process of self betterment and growth. “For us it’s music but we hope anyone can hear these songs and feel motivated to keep pushing on their own journey,” the band explain of the EP overall. Inspired by drum and bass to their influences in Stormzy to Kendrick Lamar ‘Elevate’s past is a start contract to the trap adjacent production of ‘Aeronautics’, a fiery motivator for self confidence.
Speaking to the process of Elevate’s making, Tjaka share, “This EP has evolved into a showcase of the way we can adapt our live energy into different styles of music. There are a number of diverse influences heard through each track, and this best represents our approach to music over the last few years. Working with producers Magoo and Tom Thum on this project has meant we have explored many different ideas and it has been an enjoyable project to piece together.”
Elevate follows a strong run of touring across the UK, including a breakout debut at The Great Escape (being included in Ones To Watch’s Top 8 of the festival), and multiple shows in London, including supporting South Summit. Known for their festival-ready live show, Tjaka recently returned to so-called Australia with a set at Dark Mofo, and now kick off their EP celebrations with a hometown show in Brisbane/Magandjin tonight, before heading to Cairns/Gimuy, Wollongong/Woolyungah, Sydney/Gadigal, and Melbourne/Naarm through July.
“The Elevate tour brings this EP concept to life as a live experience,” Tjaka continue. “Each performance is designed to uplift, inspire, and create a space where everyone feels the same sense of transcendence and power that fuels us on stage. Through our music, we invite audiences to join us in this elevated state, creating unforgettable moments of unity and celebration.”
Comprising of two Fabila brothers Geoff and Jake, cousin Luke, and close friend Felix Fogarty, Tjaka is derived from “Tjakamarra”, the skin name given to the Fabilas, who are proud descendants of the Jabirr Jabirr tribe in the Western Australian Kimberley. Praised as “a band who are destined for evolution, lead by their passion” (triple j Unearthed), Tjaka are building on the wave of plaudits from their previously released string of singles: ‘Dancing Mood’, ‘Break It Down’, ‘Bada Dada’ and ‘The Shake Up’ with Dameeeela, and ‘In A Box’, which saw support from COLORS, Rolling Stone AU/NZ, triple j, triple j Unearthed and RAGE among others.
Blending elements of electronic, funk and hip-hop with Aboriginal ancestral influences, Tjaka’s vision sets out to showcase the connections between the old and the new, crafting music that is deeply connected to their Aboriginal heritage with an extensive live show resumed across esteemed festivals like Splendour in The Grass, Dark Mofo, BIGSOUND, SXSW Sydney, Woodford Folk Festival and PASIWALI Festival (Taiwan). Today they affirm their place as a vital addition to the national landscape.
