TT & FRIDAY* of his forthcoming debut Antarctica mixtape due Dec 1. Complete with music video by Passive Kneeling. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.
No stranger to the Eora / Sydney creative scene, Baughan’s work as BAYANG continues to assert his position as a leading voice, as self-assured and unapologetic with intent as always. Wearing the area, his politics, and cutthroat verbiage on his sleeve, BAYANG credits his craft to hip hop’s limitless possibility with a firm desire to consistently surprise and give anything a crack. An attitude that straddles outlaw and outlier best typified via Acclaim Magazine’s profile: “He taps into past adversity to fuel the things he expresses, becoming a two-headed creature of art that provides us entertainment, relatability, and encouragement. He communicates through music but finds his sense of hope instilled in the power of humanity.”
Today’s ‘Antarctica ft. TT & FRIDAY*’, sombre in sound though cool in delivery, details just how BAYANG’s transition from hardcore and metal into alternative hip hop was pre-destined – always with him, waiting to strike. Indebted to plugg and heavily Soundcloud influenced, ‘Antarctica ft. TT & FRIDAY*’ spawned from a freestyle in a time of respite. BAYANG explains, “It was cooked up at Bobby Flowers’ place up the coast. Bunch of us went up there to jam and chill at the beach, and the space to think led us to that track – my girlfriend laid down some guitar, a mate laid down vocals and I just ruminated about endless horizons. FRIDAY* blessed it with a verse once we were back dying in the city and the result was this dreamy little track. One for eating a square on the glacial ice shelves.”
Boasting “one of the toughest appearances in the booth this year” on triple j’s Bars of Steel, BAYANG’s thwarting idioms have collaborated with 1300’s Nerdie, Too Birds’ Teether, Kuya Neil, Jamaica Moana, Behind You, Marcus Whale, Ryan Fennis, Voidhood and more alongside joint releases with BRACT, REDBRICKGOTHIK (nominated for Record of the Year at the FBi Radio SMAC Awards) and the recently debuted GUILD project with Sevy, Grasps and Slim Set’s Uncle Kal. Recently BAYANG’s live show took to FBi Radio’s SXSW Sydney showcase and previously to stages at Soft Centre, Sydney Festival and the Sydney Opera House forecourt’s BARRA BUWARI showcase.
BAYANG (tha Bushranger) marks his next chapter today with a release that teases a larger foray into the deeply spiritual; a toast to life in his forthcoming debut mixtape. Indebted to a transitory phase of personal development, BAYANG strives to maintain an unpredictible next step as strong as his determination to find the marvel of the everyday in each possible instance he can. “I’m not just one note,” he shares. “I love being a vibekiller – but people contain a lot of complexity, a lot of different faces, and I wanna be true to that in my art. In a way it captures a process in my life that’s been latent and in waiting for a long time. It’s the spring after the long winter!”
