“The song I can’t get out of my head right now: Way Dynamic - Miffed It”
“the unassumingly brilliant gentle, sunny folk-pop of the enigmatic Dylan Young”
“I love Way Dynamic. It’s a very uniquely tasteful Australian experience to me in the sense that the sound design is so impeccable. It’s got that Kevin Parker attention to detail, like it’s got to sound so authentic and rich and warm before you even get drawn into the songs, which are beautiful”

Way Dynamic, the project of Melbourne songwriter Dylan Young, today shares his new single ‘Officially’ via Spoilsport Records (AU) and Jagjaguwar (ROW). The song expands on his beloved album Massive Shoe, set for an international re-issue on Oct 2 via Jagjaguwar. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.
“I wrote ‘Officially’ the week I met my girlfriend, so it really is a shamefully joyous love song,” Dylanexplains. Part delirious and part lament, he continues, “But it also contends with the downside of being addicted to someone – I am a very compulsive person.” It’s a jubilant number that enhances Massive Shoe’s take on relationships squandered and flourishing.

Young’s third album, Massive Shoe, is a playful and understated, luminous and textured record originally released on Spoilsport Records. His distillation of minimalist folk-pop, art rock, and baroque pop sound has resonated far beyond what he could have imagined, most recently signing internationally to Jagjaguwar (Chanel Beads, Bon Iver, Folk Bitch Trio).
Described by CLASH as a “quietly addictive” listen and his breakout as “propelled by word-of-mouth hype”, Way Dynamic has forged a legion of fans in the time since Massive Shoe’s release in August. Capturing the hearts of a range of fans as wide as Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield, who described ‘Miffed It’ as her “favourite song in a VERY long time”; and Sir Elton John “just cannot stop listening” to‘Ibiza’. The record just scored the AIR Award for Best Independent Pop Album, following a swathe of nominations, including Independent Album of the Year and Independent Song of the Year for ‘Miffed It’.
As Way Dynamic, Dylan Young writes everything, plays almost every instrument on his albums, and produces them himself alongside long-term collaborator Stefan Blair (Good Morning, Frankie Cosmos). Part of a tight-knit Melbourne community – a chosen family of artists who all play in each other’s bands and record each other’s records – including Good Morning, Cool Sounds, Snowy Band, and more. It’s tempting to compare his songs to those of yesteryear – Young’s falsetto, his ear for harmonies, and the intricate arrangements all feel timeless. But there’s a sensibility, a turn of phrase, that feels deeply contemporary.
His intoxicating, oddball approach reflects Young’s restless, creative spirit with timeless music. He doesn’t shy away from sentiment, or equally from silliness: on any given song, he might suggest a flight to space or earnestly lament a miscommunication. That translates across all mediums whether it’s on the road with Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, This Is Lorelei, Black Country, New Road to Golden Plains, Phoenix Central Park; delivering a nonchalant cover of Ninajirachi’s ‘iPod Touch’ at the APRA Awards, or a dizzying accumulation of +20 million streams – Way Dynamic is officially the word on everyone’s lips.
Way Dynamic will return to the Northern hemisphere later this month, including their debut run of North American dates – a number of which are already sold out. See all tour routing details including newly announced Australian shows BELOW.
