Wishlist expand digital pop world with ‘Strike’
Wishlist – the new collaborative project from Naarm/Melbourne producers and longtime creative partners Stella Farnan and Soren Maryasin – share their second single, ‘Strike’, out today. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.
Augmenting a sonic world that’s starry, cinematic, and slightly out of reach, a constellation alights within the sparkly synths of ‘Strike’. True to its name, the textures are sharp and striking, harnessing a kinetic quality that balances the quiet sincerity within the lyrics. “I think the song is about seeing someone for who they are, as they are, in a loving way,” Soren shares. ”The song is pretty heightened – bigger and louder and more intense than reality. But I think it’s very easy to feel that level of intensity inside sometimes, and it’s cathartic to share in that feeling of drama.”
Influenced by artists like Imogen Heap, Sorry, and Sylvan Esso, the duo construct their songs like puzzles, layering wooden percussion, resampled vocals, and manipulated synths into arrangements that are both intricate and expansive. Their unconventional creative process informs every aspect of their craft: a co-production model with no central driver, just two laptops, two headphone sets, and a shared tape-machine-style device capturing live ideas as they emerge.
“Usually our songs come from the feeling of one small production idea, as opposed to a traditional ‘sit down at the guitar/piano and write a song’ type method,” says Stella. “We often start spending 15 minutes making sounds individually under headphones, and then we share and combine what we’ve made. In that setup I feel like we can come up with special, surprising ideas really quickly.”
‘Strike’ follows Wishlist’s gripping debut single ‘Even When I’m Leaving’ – the first document of the years of shared artistic trust they’ve accumulated. Drawing on their background as touring musicians and studio collaborators (with artists like Mallrat, Angie McMahon, Gretta Ray, Stella Bridie and others), they’ve now arrived at their most personal work to date, creating a space where pop can hold both emotion and abstraction without sacrificing either.
Since releasing their first single, Wishlist have also recently made their live debut with a packed out headline show at Naarm/Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club in August, followed by their notable sets at BIGSOUND 2025, drawing praise from music media’s multi-hyphenate Tait McGregor for their “textural, eclectic electronic pop”.
