In countdown to the release of his forthcoming EP “The New Film Star” due this August 29, Zion Garcia today unveils his brand new single ‘SCORPIO SWORD’. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.
As the latest preview of “The New Film Star”, ‘SCORPIO SWORD’ is a release that sparked the catalyst for the EP and acknowledges his state of emotionality while building the project, with the value of making something ‘your own’. Freeform in delivery and rap-rock originality inspired by a love for Guitar Hero 2, Zion explains “I’ve been encouraged by my close collaborators that ‘SCORPIO SWORD’ is a song that only I could make. I always want to search for something that is entirely mine, but the pursuit of that isn’t necessary in art. Imitation is part of the journey, but this song was born out of my love for guitar hero 2. I was trying to make songs off my love of the setlist in that game.”
Opening the door to deep personal storytelling, he reveals ‘SCORPIO SWORD’ purposefully took multiple roads of verses, song structures and adjustments before it got to where it is today. “I feel I’m always suppressing an intense insecurity or overthinking all my social interactions. We all wanna feel respected. I’m just learning more and more through this journey I’m on in my art, that perhaps it’s all entirely about how you feel about yourself, and everything else external to that is entirely futile. [SCORPIO SWORD is] a style of rap I feel is really hard to crack, probably because It’s done in a derivative manner most of the time. However, I think it just happened naturally, so it worked out nicely.”
Through “dorky, geek rap,” melody-heavy cuts and punk-rock elements reminiscent of N.E.R.D. and Paris Texas, ‘SCORPIO SWORD’ joins previous singles ‘FIGHTBACK‘ and ‘Sensitive‘ to make up “The New Film Star”, a project both rewriting history and “figuring shit out” in real time. “The New Film Star” pulls the curtain back on Zion Garcia and plays out like a vignette viewed in technicolour and intersected with elements of growth, accountability, independence, love, grief and confident delusion.
Having firmly marked his place across Gadigal/Sydney’s music circuits, Zion Garcia’s breakthrough has been built from his heart-on-his-sleeve approach to life, drawing from his own identity, self-assuredness and indispensable commentary. Embracing a DIY rap volatility margined by his endless creativity, Zion Garcia has steadily cultivated an apex of next generation hip-hop – shaped by how he chooses to show up. Seamlessly weaving through disparate genres, his stream of new music sits like the middle ground between a blockbuster and cult classic of his own making. Take a seat and let the credits roll.
